Welcome to [U12] KARATE KIDS — where kids learn traditional karate while building the confidence, discipline, focus, and perseverance that help them succeed in school and in life.
Since 1988, our Head Instructor has been teaching kids more than just kicks and punches. We teach them how to listen, focus, work hard, handle challenges, learn from mistakes, and keep going.
Because success isn’t about being the most naturally talented kid in the room.
It’s about learning to:

These are the habits that build confident, capable kids — and they don’t stop when class ends.
They carry into school, sports, friendships, and eventually the workplace and adult life.
Karate Kids don’t leave those habits at the dojo door.
Give your child more than a sport. Give them skills for life.
What karate kids learn through long term karate practice
Traditional Okinawan Shorin-ryu asks a child to do hard things on purpose. Stand still. Listen the first time. Repeat a movement two hundred times because the two hundred and first will be better. Bow to a partner you just lost to.

- In the dojo, rote practice and repetitive learning are still practiced.
- Accountability for mistakes and errors.
- Parents often see immediate improvements at school.
- Consistency
- Showing up regularly, even when they don’t feel like it.
- Progress comes from steady practice rather than occasional bursts of effort.
- Discipline
- Comfort with correction.
- “again” isn’t failure — it’s Tuesday.
- Listening to instructors and following directions.
- Learning to do something correctly even when it’s challenging or not particularly fun.
- Patience
- Understanding that belts, techniques, and skills take time.
- Being willing to make mistakes and keep working.
- Respect
- Respecting instructors, training partners, opponents, and themselves.
- Learning that respect is demonstrated through actions, not just words.
- Perseverance
- A belt takes months — almost nothing else in a nine-year-old’s life teaches effort on that timeline.
- Continuing after getting something wrong.
- Learning to think, “I haven’t got it yet,” rather than “I can’t do it.”
- Focus
- Paying attention during instruction.
- Staying present instead of worrying about what everyone else is doing.
- Confidence without loudness
- Kids who know they can handle themselves stop needing to prove it. That’s the quiet reason karate helps with bullying. Being willing to try something new.
- Gradually developing confidence through accomplishing things that once seemed difficult.
- Humility
- Being proud of accomplishments without looking down on others.
- Understanding that there is always something new to learn.
- Courage
- Trying despite being nervous or uncertain.
- Having the courage to make mistakes, ask questions, and challenge themselves.
- Responsibility/Accountability
- Remembering their equipment and training requirements.
- Taking ownership of their progress instead of relying entirely on parents or instructors.
- Positive Attitude
- Approaching challenges with “Let’s see if I can do this.”
- Learning from corrections rather than becoming discouraged by them.
- Goal Setting
- Having something to work toward—whether that’s a new belt, a particular technique, a tournament, or simply improving themselves.
Not a strip-mall black belt. A recognized system.
Our students train inside the official structure of the sport:
- Karate Alberta — the official provincial governing body for karate in Alberta.
- Karate Canada — Canada’s official national sport organization for karate, recognized by the Government of Canada and by the Canadian Olympic Committee.
- World Karate Federation — the only international federation for karate recognized by the International Olympic Committee, and the body that governed karate at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
That chain is the real pathway: club → provincial → national team → world stage. Most of our kids will never walk all of it. It matters anyway. A child training in a system with a genuine top end is held to a different standard than one collecting stripes toward a belt nobody else recognizes. Rank earned here means something outside this building.
Important notes for parents
- [U12] means students whose ages are 11 and younger.
- We only accept students as young as age 5.
- All students must be bathroom independent.
