[Ages 18+]

FOOTHILLS KARATE YYC offers evening and daytime classes for adults wanting to learn the original Okinawan Karate, Shorin-Ryu.

Adult classes are open to all belt levels, ages 13+. Here we practice basics, kata (forms), self-defense, kumite (fighting), as well as discuss history and philosophy of martial arts. Karate will help sharpen the mind and body. You will gain physical fitness, self-motivation, confidence and discipline.

Karate-do is a Japanese term which generally translates as “Empty Hand Way.” Although Karate-do is known to be an effective form of self-defense, it is also an equally effective form of mental and physical self-improvement, for adults and children alike. Through regular Karate-do training, the mind and body work together to become a unified force for self-protection. Karate-do training also provides vigorous exercise from which one can improve muscular and cardiovascular development as well as improving balance, coordination and reflexes.

Our Chief Instructor, Sensei Ken Larkman has been practicing Kung-fu and Karate since 1977.

Shorin-ryu is a body-friendly, reality-based system of self-defense developed by the Pechin, civil servants and bodyguards to the king of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

1. Stress Relief
Once in the Karate Dojo, lined up in file and rank in front of the Sensei, the students are taken away from their daily worries for 90 minuets. Collectively following cadences of the Sensei counting repetitions of calisthenics, techniques, kicks and kata, the students are focused on their activity leaving the stressors in their lives behind.

2. Increased Energy
Exercise creates a healthier cardiovascular system, which in turns moves more oxygenated blood throughout your body, more efficiently resulting in higher energy levels. Regular exercising helps you sleep more sound at night giving you more energy during the day.

3. Improved Coordination and Reflexes
Beginners expect to lose weight, get stronger and improve their cardiovascular system, but are surprised when they find themselves catching a glass falling from the counter. The increased reflexes can be used in many daily activities to include driving and operating machinery.

4. Increased Balance
5. More Motivation

Adult and Advanced Karate is a twofold program providing an accommodation for adults wanting to learn karate but can’t make it to the earlier classes, as well as providing a teaching and learning environment to our Brown and Black Belts.

For the Adult program no past martial arts experience is required, and instruction will be geared to the student present. Study for the adults will start with an introduction to basic karate etiquette, terminology, blocks, punches, kicks, and stances, kicking techniques, stretching and exercise, basic routines and of course an introduction to our Kata/Forms. With 21 Kata Forms, students have a number of years to be introduced to and learn to perform these historical self-defense systems over the next few years as they move up in ability and knowledge.

The Advanced program occupies the same time slot but is focused on our Third, Second, and First level Brown Belts. Here advanced katas are covered and explored along with further self-defense techniques and teachings opportunities, and students from Orange to Black Belt can gain further instruction and interaction with each other. Study is a little more demanding and as learning progresses instruction will cover deeper applications and movements.

For our instructors, as well as our Brown and Black Belts, we will look in depth at our curriculum and including self-defense, Yakusoto kumite and kumite drills, Kata presentation, interpretation, and application. The advanced nature of these classes allows this time period to be a training opportunity, an opportunity to have teaching time and advance their own understanding and ability in Karate under the direction of our seasoned instructors, currently, 4th, 5th, and 6th degree black belts themselves who too will be advancing their own Karate.

Dress code will be served by comfortable sweats and shirt or a GI that is provided with the initial sign up.
